“Always elegance first.” That’s short version of what describes the Venezuelan-born, American designer, Carolina Herrera. Ms. Herrera has had a direct hand in styling First Ladies of the United States from Jacqueline Kennedy all the way to current Melania Trump, which equates to over 55 years of personal styling for America’s most prominent political women, and counting.
Ms. Herrera, in her late 7th decade, is an exceptional example of grace and style.
The woman who best personifies the “work uniform”, Carolina consistently turns to the classic outfit of a white button-up blouse and a black skirt. Brownie points if the skirt has pockets.
Ms. Herrera grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, raised with exposure to the arts, languages, and sporting. She began designing clothes, in 1981, and has since also expanded to the perfume and haute couture realms of the industry.
Carolina is known for her ability to find inspiration in a variety of details; from nature and art to architecture and design. The results equate to a remarkable balance of rigid form and soft flow.
Her first start with design, however, was in developing her own. Long before she began designing clothes for other women, she was named on the best dressed list, and has since been featured on the cover of Vogue seven times. Her personal style has a direct influence to her clothing design, and in turn, she designs clothes that she would want to wear herself.
We learn best from her how to utilize a clean and chic outfit as a canvas for fine accessorizing. The proper way to achieve this balance in dressing comes only from a thoughtfully considered approach to your dressing routine. Carolina is also a fabulous example of how to dress more than just "your age". She has thoughtfully and elegantly dressed timeless for decades, showing that fashion can truly span the course of time.
The point that she has been designing for the last 55 years speaks incredible credibility to her passion and ability. In a world of trends, Carolina teaches us what it means to stay true to who you are.
The quote beginning this article comes from the designer herself, which says, “Carolina Herrera represents elegance. It is confidence, romance, modern refinement- but always elegance first.”
Get the look:
White button-up. This one is actually a must. Carolina Herrera wears a white blouse almost every time she makes an appearance. Take a page right from her book: elongate your neck by turning up your collar.
Statement jewelry. As mentioned before, by keeping your outfit simple, you can really strike it home with some bauble-style jewelry. Ms. Herrera has been seen rocking the extra chunky pearl earrings or necklace, as well as a variety of other jewel stone pieces.
Black skirts. Go for a sleek, A-line midi skirt for an occasion out, or make an impression with a grand black ballgown-style skirt. Both paired with a white or black blouse, of course.
Gold. Always a timeless, chic, and elegant accent to your look.
Pockets. Who knows what a fashion designer really has to carry around to events like fashion shows, but it must not be much! Carolina is often seen with her hands in her pockets, whether she is wearing a skirt or pants. Pockets can make for a chic alternative to carrying a clutch. Just be sure your pocket contents aren’t so bulky as to stand out.
Switch it up. If your co-workers have gotten used to your white and black uniform, really throw them for a loop by wearing a black blouse with a white skirt.
Heels are forever. We admire Ms. Herrera’s ability to effortlessly strut her style in a pair of striking heels- it gives us hope that we can wear heels forever, ourselves.
