If there’s one trend that we are ready to embrace wholeheartedly, it’s the midi dress! *Note: not to be confused with “mini dress”.* Shorthand for mid-length dress, the name is pretty self-explanatory.
Admittedly, it’s not a new style. It’s simply the darling comeback of the retro dress often seen in black and white TV shows. Think Lucille Ball in “I Love Lucy”, Mary Tyler Moore in the “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, and so many other classics.
However, today’s midi dress is a much more sleek and streamlined version of the classic dress.
You certainly can find the more vintage-feeling “A-line” dress like the Ellie Saab number pictured here, but most midi dresses are simply a sheath style dress with an extended hem. For a little more clarification, a midi dress typically has a hemline that hits in a range extending from just below the knees to mid-calf. And we can all appreciate a little extra length!

How to style it:
- Vintage. If your midi dress has that tight-fitting bodice with an “A-line” skirt, own the vintage silhouette with a pair of statement earrings reminiscent of retro stage jewelry, and don your classic pumps.
We love the way Kate Middleton styled the trending midi look in this baby blue coat dress- paired with some simple neutral accessories to let the dress shine on its own!
- Sheath. With the more form-fitting style of a sheath dress, keep your accessories modern with a more simple pair of earrings. We still recommend a classic pump with this dress as it is generally a more classy style.
- Mix and match. Perhaps the easiest option of all is to match your favorite accessories to your new midi dress and enjoy the comfort and confidence of this great new trend.
